Art 107 – Color & Design
Course Description
This course will cover the basic elements and principles of design as well as basic color theory. Students will work with various media, including graphite, collage, cut paper, markers, acrylic paint, and others. The assignments will help each student develop their design and color skills. Effective time management will be necessary, as the workload is heavy.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Define and describe the basic elements of design: value, line, shape, texture, and color
- Define and describe at least eight basic principles of design and visual organization
- Begin to have a working knowledge about how to use elements and principles together
- Explore the design principles of repetition, variation, focal point, dominant/subordinate, placement, and balance.
- Have a basic working knowledge of color theory.
- Describe traditional forms of color schemes and color harmony.
- Begin to experiment with idea and concept generation.
- Speak and write critically about personal and peer artworks.
Course Work
Course objectives will be accomplished through the following: learning interactions, development exercises, and application assignments. Estimated weekly workload is 9–12 hours.
Learning Interactions consist of reading; practicing what has been learned; sharing work with classmates; and commenting to classmate's works—often with peer assessments.
Development Exercises are short explorations of content concepts with various media and are usually worth 25 points each. After completing the exercises, you will scan them and post them. Usually you are required to post exercises in the Instructor Dropbox See the instructions for each exercise for directions. Submit exercises by the due date.
For each exercise, full points will be awarded for submitting on time; the quality of your design; if you followed the directions; and if you created effective response posts (comments & often peer reviews) to at least three classmates. Responding, critiquing, and interacting with peers is an extremely important part of the learning in this course. Thus, full credit will not be given for assignments, regardless of quality, if interaction with peers is absent.
Course Materials
There is an art supply kit that you will need for the course. You can obtain it from the BYU-I Bookstore less expensively than if you purchase all components individually. The list changes slightly from semester to semester depending on vendor issues. The most recent list is at the bottom of this page. If you get to the bookstore and what they have is slightly different from the list below—trust their list—it will be the most correct.
Because the materials vary slightly each semester, the price varies slightly as well. But to give you an idea of “average” kit cost, Atypical price breakdown of the Art 107 Online kit would be: MSRP price: $184.08 Bookstore price: $124.99 Class Required 15% discount price: $106.24 (for the first two weeks of the semester.)
Learning Model Architecture
This course will give students opportunities to Prepare, Teach One Another, and Ponder & Prove on a regular basis. Weekly assignments, along with discussions and group feedback sessions with fellow students, provide an effective environment for learning and teaching.
Grading Policies
Your final grade will be determined by the following:
- Quality of your work
- Demonstrated effort
- Craftsmanship
- Participation and quality of critiques to classmates
Allow at least one week for the instructor to grade submitted designs. Grades are based on the criteria stated in the weekly lessons as well as assignment completion and participation in group critiques and discussion boards. Participation is a key element in online learning, so please be aware that a student may fail if he/she does not participate in class critiques and discussions.
Late work will only be accepted at the instructor's discretion.

Materials
Note: The bookstore often has to vary slightly from the list when items become unavailable. They always check with the Art Dept. to make certain that the variations will still work. If you get to the bookstore and their list varies from the one below—follow their version—it is the most up-to-date.
