Course Description
This is an online course required for all automotive majors. It is designed to introduce students to some of the foundational principles and knowledge required to be successful in other automotive courses. It also includes some lab safety training. This is an online course only; there is no actual lab associated with it.
Content and Topics
Foundational operating principles that make up the systems found in today's automobiles will be introduced. Students will learn how to perform basic maintenance repairs in order to keep a vehicle performing optimally and reliably. Additional topics in this course will include safety, fasteners, tools, electricity, using service information, and the importance of customer service.
Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to prepare students for other automotive courses and for employment in the automotive industry by providing them with the essential skills and knowledge they will need. Through the use of electronic media, students will learn some foundational principles that are not covered in any other specific automotive course due to time restraints.
Course Outcomes
- Learn recommended and safe practices for working on or around an automobile.
- Learn to locate and use service information and specifications for an automobile.
- Understand the basic purpose and operation of major vehicle systems and components.
- Understand the benefits of performing recommended inspections and maintenance.
- Know how to develop a repeatable diagnostic strategy.
- Be aware of various career opportunities in the automotive industry.
Learning Model Architecture
You will prepare each week by reading and studying the presentations. You will teach one another by following the directions provided each week where you explain and show different concepts about the car to a friend. You will ponder and prove what you have learned by taking a test at the end of the week, as well as report on your teaching activity.
Course Requirements
Students are required to complete online assignments by the deadlines outlined in the course schedule. Students have the option to take and submit pictures of their weekly teaching experiences, which would require access to a digital camera to take pictures (digital phone cameras will work nicely). If students choose not to submit pictures they will not be penalized.
Grading Policies
You will be graded only on your post-tests and Teaching Report submissions each week.
