BUS 240: Word Processing I Syllabus

Overview

BUS 240 will provide a thorough understanding of Microsoft Word and enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and professionalism in users and documents. Students will customize and automate information using Microsoft Word. Topics include navigation and format of business documents and envelopes, graphics, tables, charts, labels, themes, and styles.

Requirements

Required Resources

  1. Software—Students will need the most current software version of Microsoft Office Suite. (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.)
    • If you do not already have access to Microsoft Office products, you can get the Office 365 version for free with your BYUI student account.
    • Go to portal.office.com (links to an external site) and choose your BYUI email account. Note: Using your BYUI email lets you download for free.
      1. Select Install Office (located upper right-hand corner).
      2. When it is done downloading, you are ready to go to work.
  2. There is no required textbook. All materials will be provided for you in Canvas.
  3. Recommended Hardware: We want you to be successful in this course. Since you need to download Microsoft Word 2019, it is highly recommended to use a PC to complete this course. Be aware that the course was written for students using a PC. It does not include instructions for using a Mac. You can still complete all of the assignments on a Mac, however, it will take more time.

Expectations

Announcements

The instructor will post WEEKLY announcements with valuable information pertaining to the week's assignments. Each week's announcement will include a video tutorial on how to do pieces of assignments. Information in the videos will help with some quiz questions. 

Feedback

You can expect to receive grades and feedback within 7 days of the due date for all assignments.

Due Dates

It is expected that you will break up your time into one to two-hour chunks each day. This will help you best learn and remember the material. There are two formal due dates for this course: one in the middle of the week and one at the end of the week.

As a sign of professionalism and respect, you are expected to submit quality work on or before all deadlines. Late work will not be accepted.

Look at the Calendar to see the deadlines for your time zone. Notice the patterns of the course and establish your study schedule accordingly. 

Course Navigation

The course is structured so you have multiple opportunities to practice what you learn. Proceed through the week by completing each page in the order presented. Most weeks follow the pattern outlined below. 

  1. Begin each week by reading your instructor's announcement. 
  2. Read the Introduction page. 
  3. Study the suggested readings and video and complete the exercises.
  4. Complete assignments by following specific instructions.
    • You will earn points based on how well you meet the required components for each assignment.
      • Your instructor has the right to reduce your score if you submit poor quality work.
      • You are encouraged to study the materials and ask questions as needed in order to do your best work.
    • You do not have to print your Assignments.
  5. Complete weekly quizzes.
    • The quiz is open book and you may take the quiz up to three times to try and achieve a 90% or higher.
  6. Visit the Support Forum to ask and answer questions.
  7. You will complete the final project in Week 14. 

Time Commitment

BUS 240 is a three-credit course. BYU-Idaho recommends you spend about three hours per week per credit on your course work. Therefore, please reserve nine hours in your schedule each week to study and complete your work for this course. For a block class you may need to double your hours weekly.

Grading

Your grade in this course is calculated by dividing the number of points you earn by the total points possible. Refer to the Grades tab for specific information.

A 93 – 100%
A- 90 – 92%
B+ 87 – 89%
B 83 – 86%
B- 80 – 82%
C+ 77 – 79%
C 73 – 76%
C- 70 – 72%
D+ 67 – 69%
D 63 – 67%
D- 60 – 62%
F Below 60%

Collaboration

An important part of this class is what you can learn from other students. Keep in mind you will complete assignments and exams on your own. However, the weekly Support Forum is meant to be a place to learn from and teach one another. Ask questions and share your insights.

As you share ideas, learning, and knowledge, you will grow your knowledge base in a way simple practice never could. Be sure to take advantage of this in an honest way while still doing your own work.
