Advanced Grammar In Languages
Course description
An effective English teacher must use the language well, know how the language works, be able to explain language rules to students, and be familiar with the various principles and methodologies for best sharing this knowledge. Our class will focus on the structure of the English language in significant detail so that you will gain a deeper understanding of how it works. The material will be presented in a way that will invite you to ponder how various aspects of English compare with those of your native language. Application of this knowledge will allow students to evaluate and address language deficiencies, identify resources useful in furthering language learning, and follow a program of lifelong language learning.
Course objectives
- Learn what language is and how to study it
- Improve mastery of the various aspects of English (pronunciation, word formation, sentence structure, meaning, and spelling)
- Understand how English compares and contrasts with your native language
- Develop an awareness of important language issues (bilingualism, dialects, styles, etc.)

Student population
Online students only. TESOL 104 is part of the required coursework for students pursuing an online TESOL certificate from BYU-Idaho. This program offers students a series of classes that will enable them to teach English to speakers of other languages who reside within the United States or English as a foreign language if they live in some other country.
Class Policies
Assignment dates are specified on the course calendar and the instructor will post daily announcements on I-Learn. Late assignments and makeup work for unexcused absences will be penalized.
