This course is a theoretical, academically-oriented course focusing on the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of the child from conception through adolescence. Students will explore the influences of family, peers, and social institutions on the child's development.

Proctored Exams and Assessments

This course will use an online proctoring software called Proctorio. This makes it possible for students to take assessments and exams without a human proctor present. Proctored exams can be accessed like any other exam, once the software has been installed. Exams will be recorded by Proctorio and reviewed by the BYUI Testing Center. Any questionable exams will be forwarded to the instructor for further review.

Course Outcomes

1. Identify and describe the typical physical, cognitive, emotional, and social developmental needs and tasks for each stage of development.
2. Demonstrate an introductory understanding of major developmental theories and accepted methods of scientific inquiry.
3. Recognize and apply strategies to create environments and cultivate relationships that will foster healthy development.
4. Recognize the role of the family in nurturing and guiding the development of young children.
5. Encourage love of nature and God's creations in children.

Learning Model

This course seeks to apply the principles and steps of the learning model throughout the course. You will be expected to exercise faith in Jesus Christ, seek teaching from the Holy Ghost, and study the word of God to aid to your efforts to complete your individual assignments. By participating in the dig deeper presentations, in addition to completing major assignments, you will be expected to act for yourself and accept responsibility for learning and teaching. This course also encourages you to develop your ability to love, serve, and teach one another by being authentic, open, and thoughtful in discussion board conversations.

You will prepare to learn by studying the readings and associated material. You will teach one another through the dig deeper presentations and subsequent discussions. You will ponder lessons learned and prove your learning by making notes on your observations, completing quizzes and completing the final exam.

Expectations

Feedback

You can expect to receive grades and feedback within seven days of the due date for all assignments.

Workload

You will be expected to spend an average of 9–12 hours each week on this class.

Late Work

As a sign of professionalism and respect, you should complete your work on time. However, your instructor has the discretion to accept late work or extend due dates as appropriate.

Retries

Three attempts are allowed on each Study Check. However, the questions are randomized so they may not be the same ones provided in a previous attempt.

Extra Credit

Extra credit is not allowed in this course.
