Financial Management Syllabus

Outcomes

  • Students will develop an understanding of and ability to work with fundamental financial concepts.
  • Students will learn basic mathematics of finance and the use of associated technology tools. 
  • Students will learn real-world applications of core financial principles.

Description

This introductory course in financial management provides a basic foundation for other courses in finance and business management. Topics covered in this course include the following: financial statement analysis, financial forecasting, leverage, working capital management, capital structure, capital budgeting, short and long-term financial management, sources of financing, time value of money, and cost of capital.

Assignments

Assignments will be due by midweek and at the end of the week. This will allow for plenty of time to comment in discussion boards, ask assignment-specific questions that may come up, and submit assignments on time.

Collaboration

Students are encouraged to help each other understand the reading material and practice homework problems. Answers and solutions to practice homework problems are provided with each assignment. After seeking help by collaborating with each other and reviewing the solutions, if students still have specific questions the instructor may also assist you

Learning Model

The course activities follow a cycle of prepare, ponder and prove, and teach one another.

  • Prepare: Students will prepare readings, videos, and practices.
  • Teach One Another: Students will teach one another through discussion boards.
  • Ponder: Students will complete Excel model assignments and case studies.
  • Prove: Students will prove their knowledge and skills by completing quizzes and exams.

Prerequisites

Take 1 of the following:
  • ACCTG180 - Survey of Accounting
  • ACCTG201 - Financial Accounting 
Take 1 of the following:
  • ACCTG202 - Managerial Accounting
  • BA211 - Business Fundamentals
  • FIN201 - Introduction to Finance

Earned at least 30 credits

You will need access to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). The BYU-Idaho Bookstore provides free downloads of the Microsoft Office Suite.  For additional help.

Proctored Exams and Assessments

This course will use an online proctoring software called Proctorio. This makes it possible for students to take assessments and exams without a human proctor present. Proctored exams can be accessed like any other exam, once the software has been installed. Exams will be recorded by Proctorio and reviewed by the BYUI Testing Center. Any questionable exams will be forwarded to the instructor for further review.

Expectations

Workload

The online class guideline states that for every credit hour, you should expect to spend at least three hours of work. For this three-credit class, you should plan on spending approximately nine hours per week. Failure to start working early and diligently continue working on assignments will cause you grief.

If you expect to be successful in this course, plan to practice four days a week to learn the different techniques and skills.

Group Work

You will be working in small asynchronous groups for various activities and discussions.

Late Work

As a sign of professionalism and respect, you should complete your work on time. However, your instructor has the discretion to accept late work or extend due dates as appropriate.
