This prophecy is about you. Whether you work on a software development team, a quality assurance team, or another kind of team, you can make a difference and be recognized for it. This course provides you with an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and experience that will help you do so.

Required Resources

This course has no required textbook. All of your study material will be provided in the weekly study pages. The main study and discussion in this course will revolve around six case studies. These case studies have been prepared specifically for this CSE 170 course for BYU-Idaho students. 

This course will have six in-person forum sessions. These sessions will be conducted in Zoom. Therefore, in order to participate fully, you need a computer, microphone, and camera. 

Structure

Course Outcomes (CO)

Students will learn to do the following:

  1. Analyze personality and leadership factors in working relationships.
  2. Become conversant in the common vernacular of software engineering.
  3. Identify key constraints that inhibit personal, team, and organizational growth.
  4. Evaluate how personal beliefs and actions can affect others.
  5. Understand how to negotiate expectations with peers and professional colleagues.

Learning Model

Each week you will be expected to prepare by studying a case study and additional materials. You will then teach one another by sharing your thoughts and feelings on key questions from the case study. On A weeks, your discussion will be in held within a discussion board. On B weeks you will attend a one-hour forum facilitated by a CSE 170 instructor. Finally, each week you will ponder and prove what you have learned by completing an analysis or reflection of the week's material. 

Expectations

Workload

This is a two-credit course. As such, you can expect to work 2–3 hours for each credit. Therefore, anticipate this course needing 4–6 hours of time each week to be successful.

Group Work

This course has no extended group projects or assignments. Rather, you will be assigned to a small group with which you will have meaningful discussion about the week's case study. You will also attend a forum every other week with a large group. In that forum, you are expected to participate meaningfully and share your thoughts and feelings on the case studies.

Forum Discussions

One of the main learning activities in this course is the in-person forum discussions. These discussions are held every other week (B weeks). These discussions are conducted in Zoom. At the beginning of the semester (W01), you will be given a schedule of various times you can attend a forum session. It is not required that you attend a session with your assigned CSE 170 instructor. You may attend a session that fits best with your schedule that week. Late Work

As a sign of professionalism and respect, you should complete your work on time. However, your instructor has the discretion to accept late work or extend due dates as appropriate.
