HS 378 - Healthcare Strategy

Learning Objectives

The primary learning objective for this course is to help students clearly identify core leadership “competencies” or principles as they pertain to the healthcare industry and the careers of students preparing themselves to become professional managers/administrators in that field. Moreover, leadership skills will also be an integral part of students’ lives as they fulfill roles as members of families, communities, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through the study of research-based textbooks, supplemental publications, and the lives of secular and spiritual leaders, students will develop and enhance those skills necessary to be leaders throughout all aspects of their lives.

Required Materials

At BYU-Idaho, we are encouraged to minimize the cost of textbooks, especially for our online students. With that in mind, we are pleased to inform you that the principal textbook for this course is available electronically from the library at no cost to you. Compare prices for your textbooks through the University Store Price Comparison site. They will show you all of the options from the University Store plus several online options to help you find the best price It is a resource that we encourage students to acquire for their personal libraries. However, if you are an international student or if you choose not to afford a purchased textbook, the library’s electronic copy is available at no cost.

Activities and Assessments 

Professionalism Points (50 Points): It is expected that each student conduct him or herself in a professional manner. This portion of your grade will be based on that professional conduct. Areas of evaluation include, but are not limited to, active participation discussions and contribution to presentations, respect for peers, response to feedback from others in a professional manner and attitude. You should also avoid plagiarism in your presentations by giving appropriate citations and living the honor code on exams.

Syllabus Quiz (100 Points): A quiz on the syllabus will be administered. It will cover topics that will be addressed after you have reviewed the syllabus and is intended to help familiarize yourself with the expectations of the course.

Teach One Another (TOA) (100 Points for both the presenter or the audience): Each class member will have the opportunity to lead a class discussion in the course discussion boards. The discussion will be based on an “Exceptional Leader” or “Covey Habit." You will choose your TOA topic during week 01. If you don't choose a topic by the deadline then one will be assigned to you. You must complete the presentation, post it in the discussion board and prepare two to three questions and discussion. You will be graded on both the content of your presentation and your professionalism responding to peers. The grading rubric for this assignment is available on each of the assignment pages.

Personal Statement (100 Points): Using Appendices A and B in the Dye and Garman textbook as a guide, each student will write his/her personal statement of strengths, weaknesses and management style. Further, each student will prepare a personal statement that expresses your desired goals (both short-term and long-term), your objectives and the resources you will need to achieve them. At the end of the semester (see course schedule for due date), you will finalize your personal statement with the “hind-sight” and application of the semester’s studies. The final personal statement will be worth 100 points. 

Leader Library Book Report (100 Points): This semester you will have the opportunity to learn from some of the most intelligent leaders of the world. The books are of the most popular publications on leadership to date, and we ask that you choose one of them to read and prepare a written report on it. This report must be well-organized and written at a college level. The rubric will be included on the assignment page. You will turn in your report later during the semester but you should choose and start reading your book now. We give you the latitude of selecting a book/topic that is not on this list, if you choose, with the approval of the instructor.

Midterm and Final Exams: There will be a 200 point mid-term covering all materials through that point in the semester. A final exam worth 200 points will be held at the end of the semester and will cover all of the material in the course.

Late Assignments: Late assignments will not be accepted. If a student knows of an upcoming absence that will affect his or her ability to submit an assignment on time, these instances will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the instructor. Emergency situations (to include but not be limited to serious unexpected illness, accidents, other unforeseeable events, etc.) will also be evaluated on a case by case basis by the instructor.
