Portfolio Project Overview

Throughout the semester, students will create and submit several portfolio projects with direct course content application. The purpose of the portfolio is twofold: to showcase the content learned and to illustrate students’ ability to apply math principles in following provident living guidelines to achieve financial stability. The following are guidelines for each exhibit of the portfolio.

Life Plan

Students will create a spreadsheet to outline their financial goals, and they will include major life decisions such as what kind of employment, dwelling, and transportation they will seek. This spreadsheet must also include a second sheet with an explanation of loan payments and savings accounts. A wonderful job on this portion of the portfolio would be illustrated by how easy it is to read, the accuracy in using the formulas to compute life expenses, and how useful the spreadsheet is in making wise financial decisions. This project connects to the Math Exercises 1.2 Part C, 2.1 Part C, 3.3 Part C, and 4.1 Part C.

Budget & Expenses

Students will create a spreadsheet to record all income and expenses through most of the semester. This spreadsheet must also include a detailed budget specifying money expenditures. A stellar example of this would include outlines similar to the tables found in the financial information at providentliving.org, accurate figures, and ease of readability. An excellent spreadsheet will also include the use of the formula functions of the spreadsheet which will accommodate adjustments to your budget as circumstances change. This project connects to assignments 1.3B and 2.3A.

Visual Charts

A visual chart is one page of notes and examples to help students study for a test. It represents what they have produced, and it will be allowed on the final exam. The very best charts should be divided up by sections of the book, include examples and processes for solving equations, and be filled with examples that support material recollection. This project connects to the Math Exercises 1.3 Part C, 2.3 Part C, 3.3 Part C, and 4.3 Part C, as a visual chart is required for each chapter.

Provident Living Readings & Writing Discussions

You will read different case studies, articles, and book chapters about finances. You will write about what you have learned from these readings in discussion boards with your classmates throughout the semester. Your writing and discussions will include a comparison of principles discussed in the readings that are in harmony with the gospel and those that are not. During the final gathering of this course, you will write an essay about these principles and how you have applied them in your life. This essay will be included in your final portfolio.
