NURS 316 SYLLABUS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Professional Seminar is a RN to BSN transition course that is designed to assist students to understand what it means to be a professional nurse; to appreciate the history of nursing; to understand and prize nursing values, ethics, and standards; to recognize and deal effectively with the economic factors that influence how the profession is practiced; and to appreciate the need to be lifelong learners.
PREREQUISITES
Completion of RN licensure or by special permission per BYU-I BSN policy
CREDITS
Two semester credits: 2 hours theory/week. Total theory hours are calculated on a ratio of 1 theory-hour:1 credit-hour.
REQUIRED MATERIALS

NURSING BADGE
The RN to BSN ID badge is to be worn for all class related activities. The new ID badge is grey and white (If you have a blue RN to BSN ID badge, it does not need to be replaced). Please email a driver’s license type photograph (shoulders up, plain background, BYU-I honor code standard) and your current mailing address to: BYU-Idaho Nursing Outreach nursingoutreach@byui.edu. Badges may take up to 3 weeks for the full process.
SOFTWARE NEEDED FOR SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS
All assignments must be composed digitally and turned in through I-Learn. This will require productivity software like Microsoft Office or OpenOffice. Assignments can typically be submitted in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Rich Text Format. Assignments should never be submitted in Microsoft Works because faculty members cannot open files created in Works. Students should always check with their instructors concerning acceptable formats before submitting assignments.

LEARNING MODEL ARCHITECTURE
The Learning Model is a defining aspect of the BYU-Idaho experience that provides a pattern for continual learning and personal development long after graduation. The Brigham Young University-Idaho Learning Model is utilized in this course. Each lesson will have information for you to 1) prepare, 2) teach one another, and 3) ponder and prove.

GRADING CRITERIA
Nursing Department Grading Schedule
A final grade of 75% or greater must be maintained to receive credit for the course. The department of nursing has adopted the grading scale below that is used for BYU-Idaho Nursing courses. See the BYU-I Nursing Student Handbook in the Course Folder.

Late Assignments
All work must be completed by end of the semester as designated in the timeline set by the instructor. There is a 5% per day grade reduction if late on an assignment if that assignment is one with a due date. There are no late submissions allowed on quizzes and discussion boards.

- Overview
- Prepare Readings and Preparations: You will find on these pages the lesson preparations and chapter readings, along with links to interactive practices to help you better understand the chapter content
- Teach One Another Case Study Discussions: These discussions provide opportunity for you to critically analyze specific cases similar to those you may encounter in your Nursing career, and discuss those with your fellow classmates. Lesson 8 takes a different approach to discuss things to consider in conversations between physicians and nurses.
- Ponder and Prove Lesson Quizzes: your opportunity to show what you know from the chapter readings. Remember to take advantage of the additional practices provided with each chapter reading.
- Note: Lesson 3 and 5 have two chapters to cover that week, so plan your time accordingly.

PLAGIARISM
Copying another student's paper or any portion of it is plagiarism. Additionally, copying any portion of published material (i.e. book, journals, etc.) without adequately documenting the source is plagiarism. If five or more words in sequence are taken from a source, those words must be placed in quotes and the source referenced with author's name, date of publication, and page number of publication. If the author's ideas are rephrased, by transposing words or expressing the same idea using different words, the idea must be attributed to the author by proper referencing, giving the author's name and date of publication. If a single author's ideas are discussed in more than one paragraph, the author must be referenced at the end of each paragraph.
