Format Cells in Excel

The purpose of this activity is to provide you with some basic instructions on how to use Excel. In this activity, you will walk through a few simple steps that will familiarize you with this program. This is a supplemental activity; therefore, you are not required to complete it. However, if you are unfamiliar with Excel, it is recommended that you complete this activity.

Additional help on certain steps is available by clicking on the question mark button (This is a question mark icon) to the right of that step.

  1. Open the Excel file that you created last week. If you no longer have this file, open a blank workbook. This is a question mark icon
  2. Type today's date in cell D5. This is a question mark icon
  3. Change the format of the date to something different than what you entered in step 2. This is a question mark icon
  4. Change the color of the date you entered. This is a question mark icon
  5. Next, enter a three or more digit number into any cell you choose.
  6. Format the number to the currency format. This is a question mark icon
  7. Save and close the file.
    • Note: You will not need this file later in the course.
