Syllabus

Course Description

Welcome to Medical Terminology!

In this course, we will learn the basic parts of common medical terms and how to put them together to form words. We will memorize many combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes which are used to build common medical terms. We will practice these word-building skills using reading review activities during each lesson. The readings from I-Learn and the textbook will also help practice these skills. The textbook readings along with the end-of-chapter activities will help us learn to use the words in context and learn to communicate with other medical professionals.

Course Learning Outcomes

In this course, we will learn to:

  1. Break a medical word into its components to determine its meaning.
  2. Memorize high-frequency prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms used in the medical field.
  3. Determine word meanings when used within an authentic context.
  4. Use medical terminology references and other resources to learn new medical terms.

Course Design

This course consists of a Course Introduction, 12 Lessons, and the Course Conclusion. During the Course Introduction, we will learn about the course and learn to use the I-Learn tools. We will also learn about the basic elements of medical terms and how they are linked together to make words. The discussion board is an ice breaker to get to know other students and the lesson includes a quiz on the syllabus. During Lesson 1, we learn about prefixes, suffixes, and body structure. We introduce and learn to use the Terminology Builder, which includes all of the prefixes and suffixes which will be used throughout the semester. We also introduce the "Essential Material" which is under the "Course" tab. You will need to memorize the prefixes, suffixes, and Essential Materials by Lesson 8. In Lesson 2 through 12, we focus on one body system during each lesson. Each lesson will include an overview, one or more readings, terms to memorize which are in the Terminology Builder, and an reading review activity, two discussion boards, a quiz, and a report of study time. Along with the Integumentary System in Lesson 2, we include some general terms that don't fit into a specific system. Lesson 5 includes Mid-Course feedback. Lesson 8 includes a Final Preparation Exam. The Course Conclusion includes a final exam review, the Final Examination, and a course evaluation.
