Youth share in handcart event

Youth from Casa Grande, Coolidge, Florence, Maricopa and San Tan, Ariz. participated in a handcart trek beginning December 31. They pulled 400-500 pound handcarts four about 11 miles a day.

They slept in the desert in tents, wrapped in old blankets and sleeping bags. Preparations for the trek began in September.

The young women made prairie dresses, bonnets, bloomers and aprons.

The young men made vests and borrowed or purchased wool or cotton trousers, suspenders, flannel shirts and hats.

Some made coats out of blankets.

Baseball caps, jeans, radios, CD players, cell phones, candy, gum, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash, a mirror and pillows are not allowed

The youth were divided into “familes” of eight or nine, with predetermined “ma’s” and “pa’s.”
