A new wave of student leadership has recently crashed upon BYU-Idaho as eager new student activity directors gear up for another semester of programs and activities.

The new directors include Mary Ann Brailsford, a freshman from Greeley, Colo., art director; Angela Burns, a sophomore from Allen, Texas, dance director; Laura Turley, a junior from Saint Charles Mo., music director; Allyn Ann Hurst, a junior from Bellingham, Wash., theater director; Sharon Bee, a senior from Sierra Vista, Ariz., married student director; Britta Perkes, a senior from Vacaville, Calif., athletic director; Will McKay, a sophomore from Kennewick, Wash., intramural director; Emily Young, a junior from Portland, Ore., talent director; Jill Camp, a junior from Jerome, Idaho, entertainment director; Kandis Hale Smith, a sophomore from Seattle, campus dance director; and Daniela Lopez, a freshman from Yonkers, N.Y., multi-cultural director.

“Most of our events are going to be the same as last year’s,” Young said regarding the Talent Committee. “We will still have Skits Live, Battle of the Dance, Guitars Unplugged, as well as some new activities such as a poetry night and a Broadway review in April where students try out with a Broadway number that includes singing and/or dancing. ... We want to include all different types of talents,” she said.

Bee’s main goal is to choose activities that include all married students, including newlyweds, those married with no children and those who have children. Some of the upcoming activities include a roller-skating night, dinners, dances, symposiums and enrichment retreats at Teton Lodge, she said.

“I’m really excited. It has been so fun watching Ricks [College] grow into BYU-Idaho and to see students go from a small [married] population to something that dominates almost all of the upper division classes. It’s just fun to be a part of it,” Bee said.

Like Bee, Perkes is also eager to participate in new activities and to take part in things that have not been done until now.

“We will be having ice hockey, wrestling, women’s swimming, track and basketball. We really want to make things more interesting,” Perkes said.

The athletic program has also grown professionally and in equipment accessibility.

“The program is really becoming more professional. People are able to get something out of it. A lot of people have expressed an interest in helping out and it has impressed me a lot; it is making the program run more smoothly. The school has also been great about providing most of the equipment and making it as good as they can,” Perkes said.

The Activities Council members said they are anxious to serve and ready to give other leadership positions to the rest of the student body.

“Our program really provides a lot of opportunities for others,” Perkes said. “We have directors over each sport and positions in sports information management, marketing, game management, audio visual and photography. It’s a great professional experience to put on a resume.”

The Student Activities Council is made up of six sections: Arts Activities, which includes art, dance, music and theater directors; Enrichment Activities, which includes leadership, service, women, married student and enrichment events directors; Physical Activities, which includes fitness, outdoor, athletic and intramural directors; and Social Activities, which includes talent, entertainment and campus dances directors. There are three directors over New Student Orientation, Student Alumni and Multi-cultural activities.
