BUS 240: Word Processing I Syllabus
Note: This course code has changed from B 240 to BUS 240. You may occasionally see references to the old course code or title.
Course Description
BUS 240 will provide a thorough understanding of Microsoft Word and enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and professionalism in users and documents. Students will customize and automate information using Microsoft Office 2013. Topics include navigation and format of business documents and envelopes, graphics, tables, charts, labels, themes, and styles.
Course Learning Outcomes
- BUS 240 will provide a thorough understanding of Microsoft Word and enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and professionalism in users and documents.
- You will customize and automate information using Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, and Access.
- Topics include navigation and format of business documents and envelopes, graphics, tables, charts, labels, themes, styles, forms, macros, and merging and sorting.Create and use advanced features of macros, styles, graphics, document protection, table of contents, and indexes.
Required Materials
- SOFTWARE: Microsoft Office Suite 2013 or 2016. (The suite includes Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.)
- As a BYU-I student, you can download Microsoft Office 2016 for free through the University Store.

- TEXTBOOK: Microsoft Word 2013 with CD by Nita Rutkosky and Audrey Rutkosky Roggenkamp, Paradigm Publishing, 2011, ISBN 978-0-76385-199-6 (text and CD).
- If you purchase a used book without the CD, you can obtain the data files to complete course assignments in the Student Resources module of the course.
- Important Note for International Students: Since physical texts cannot be shipped outside of the United States, please select the digital version of the text from the University Store.
- If you also plan to take BUS 241, be aware that you will need to purchase the digital text again when you take 241 because the digital purchase will expire before you can complete both courses.
- Important Note for Domestic Students: If you plan to take both 240 and 241, your cheapest option is to purchase the physical textbook .
- If you choose to purchase the digital text, be aware that you will need to purchase it again for BUS 241 because the digital purchase will expire before you can complete both courses.
- Renting a physical textbook is not recommended, as this option will cost more than purchasing the physical textbook.

Recommended Hardware
We want you to be successful in this course. Since you need to download Microsoft Word 2013 or 2016, it is highly recommended that you use a PC to complete this course. Be aware that the course was written for students using a PC; it does not include instructions for using a Mac.
Weekly Expectations
Due Dates
It is expected that you will break up your time into 1–2 hour chunks each day. This will help you best learn and remember the material.There are two formal due dates for this course: one in the middle of the week and one at the end of the week.
As a sign of professionalism and respect, you are expected to submit quality work on or before all deadlines. Late work will not be accepted.
Look at the calendar to see the deadlines for your assignment. Notice the patterns of the course and establish your study schedule accordingly.
Course Navigation
The course is structured so that you have multiple opportunities to practice what you learn. Proceed through the week by completing each page in the order presented. Most weeks follow the pattern outlined below:
- Begin each week by reading your instructor's announcement.
- Early in the week, watch your instructor's video.
- The videos are designed to answer your questions about upcoming chapters and to demonstrate specific skills.
- Make note of that week's keyword and report it in the Accountability Quiz by midweek.
- These are easy points to earn!
- Read the Introduction page.
- Study a textbook chapter and complete the exercises.
- Take notes as you read each chapter to help you remember important concepts and tips.
- Complete ALL exercises within the assigned chapter.
- Complete a quiz to indicate whether or not you read the chapter and completed the exercises in the chapter to receive points for your work.
- These are simple questions. Either you did the reading and all the exercises or you did not.
- Do not turn in completed exercises.
- Complete assignments by following specific instructions from the textbook.
- Each chapter will have a required Assessment from the end of the chapter to turn in.
- You will earn points based on how well you meet the required components for each assignment.
- Your instructor has the right to reduce your score if you submit poor quality work.
- You are encouraged to study the materials and ask questions as needed in order to do your best work.
- You do not have to print your Assignments as your text instructs.
- Save the Assessment document and submit in I-Learn for a grade.
- Complete a chapter quiz.
- The quiz is open book and you may take the quiz up to three times to try and achieve a 90% or higher.
- As you study the chapter and complete the corresponding activities mentioned above, visit the Support Forum to ask and answer questions.
- Complete an Accountability Quiz to report the keyword from your instructor's video and your participation in the Support Forum.
- In most weeks, you will repeat steps 3–7 with another chapter from the text. In weeks 04, 07, and 10 you will complete a unit exam during the second half of the week.
- The second Accountability Quiz only asks about your participation in the Support Forum.
This pattern changes near the end of the course in weeks 11–13 as you review what you learned to prepare for the final project. You will complete the final project in Week 14.
Time Commitment
BUS 240 is a three-credit course. BYU-Idaho recommends you spend about 3–4 per week per credit on your course work. Therefore, please reserve 9–12 hours in your schedule each week to study and complete your work for this course.
Grading
Your grade in this course is calculated by dividing the number of points you earn by the total points possible. Refer to the Grades tab for specific information. You can expect about 100 points of assignments in a typical week of the course:

This course uses a slightly different grading scale than is typical in a BYU-Idaho course. Be aware that this course uses the following grading scale:

Course Policies
Collaboration
An important part of this class is what you can learn from other students. Keep in mind that you will complete assignments and exams on your own. However, the weekly Support Forum is meant to be a place to learn and teach one another. Ask questions and share your insights.
As you share ideas, learning, and knowledge, you will grow your knowledge base in a way that simple practice never could. Be sure to take advantage of this in an honest way while still doing your own work.
Tutoring
There is a tutor available to help you in this course. Tutoring is optional and offered at no additional cost to you, however it is to your advantage to meet with the tutor as needed throughout the course. Receiving one-on-one feedback and guidance from the tutor will significantly improve your skills and abilities. The tutor can help you with questions about a specific concept or frequent problems you may be encountering.
You can set up a tutoring appointment by using the contact information provided within the first few weeks of the semester. Watch for an Announcement and/or email from the tutor or your instructor with the tutor's contact information. Remember to attend all tutoring appointments you set.
