In addition to the changes specific to the Young Women's and Aaronic Priesthood programs, alterations have been made to a pamphlet for both young men and young women: For the Strength of Youth.

One reason for the update of the pamphlet is that the world has changed, according to a January 2002 New Era article.

"The youth of today are stronger than they have ever been," Elder Cecil O. Samuelson, Jr., executive director of the priesthood department and a member of the presidency of the Quorum of the Seventy, said. "But we live in an increasingly difficult and complex world. Our youth have many tough decisions before them. It is hoped that the new For the Strength of Youth will give them an even clearer sense of what they need to do and what they need to think about to live the kinds of lives that our Heavenly Father wants."

While the format has changed, the standards outlined have not.

"Church standards are guidelines for behavior based on eternal principles of happiness," according to the New Era. "Follow these standards and you will be both happy and safe."

The pamphlet does not detail what youth should and should not do. Instead, it helps them better understand gospel principles and be guided by the Spirit to live the principles. The pamphlet also explains the reasons for standards and how to explain them to friends more easily, according to the article.

Some of the changes in the pamphlet include seven new topics. They comprise a message from the First Presidency, Why Standards; Relationships With Others; Personal Integrity; Mental and Physical Health; Media and Entertainment; and a Conclusion on Worthiness and Service, according to www.lds.org.

Scripture references have also been added to the pamphlet, and more focus has been put on what President Hinckley is saying, according to the New Era.

In addition, The Testimony of the Living Christ and The Family: A Proclamation to the World have been added.

"The inclusion of these documents not only communicates that their messages are important but also emphasizes that we have living prophets to guide us," Elder Samuelson said.

The pamphlet is intended to be applicable to real life. It is a doctrinal document, but is also practical, he said.

"It is hoped that youth will not only want to learn what the standards are, but will want to apply the sensible ideas given to help them keep the standards," Elder Samuelson said. "It is not intended that these ideas be unduly prescriptive, but youth should carefully consider how to apply the doctrine."

The First Presidency promises blessings in their introduction to youth who keep the standards outlined in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet.

"We promise that as you keep these standards and live by the truths in the scriptures, you will be able to do your life's work with greater wisdom and skill and bear your trials with greater courage," the First Presidency message states. "You will have the help of the Holy Ghost. You will feel good about yourself and be a positive influence in the lives of others. You will be worthy to go to the temple to receive holy ordinances. These blessings and many more can be yours."
