During First Summer Term 2002, some BYU-Idaho students may be found south of the border as part of the MesoAmerica travel-study program.

Snorkeling in the Caribbean, spotting monkeys, toucans and crocodiles, climbing ancient pyramids, hiking through a rain forest and visiting supposed Book of Mormon sites are some of the planned MesoAmerica tour activities.

Students who take part in the program will visit Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.

Larry Thurgood, a member of the religion faculty, will accompany the tour for the third year in May .

“I really enjoy being with the students. They have such a great time and enjoy being together,” Thurgood said.

Students are not required to speak Spanish in order to sign up for the tour. Most of the guides along the way speak English, Thurgood said.

In fact, the only prerequisite consists of an anthropology class that explains where the tour will go, what they will do and how the cultures of the people differ so students will have some background, Thurgood said.

Courses such as Public Speaking (exchanged for English literature this year), Latin American Culture, Field Biology, Spanish Conversation, Social Problems, Book of Mormon, Spanish 290, Anthropology 290 and FA 100 may be taken for credit.

The tour requires a minimum of five credits; a maximum of 10 may be acquired.

The cost of the tour is $2,495 plus tuition. This cost includes all transportation, all meals, lodging and entrance fees/tickets to attractions. Tuition costs are extra, but scholarships and financial aid apply.

As with all BYU-I travel-study programs, students must act as ambassadors of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while traveling.

“As such, all participants are required to maintain high standards of honor, integrity and morality in harmony with the values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” according to the BYU-I Web site.

For more information, contact Joelle Moen of the English department at Ext. 1462, Larry Thurgood at Ext. 1503 or John Griffith of the biology department at Ext. 2026.
