The goal of newlywed students at BYU-Idaho is living close to campus while saving money. Some couples attending BYU-I have found their ideal housing in the recently remodeled Dorm 5.

Tim and Michelle Ramey were among the first couples to move in and stay the night at BYU-I’s first on-campus family housing unit.

“We have yet to settle in but look forward to living on campus,” Tim, a junior from Portland, Ore., said.

Paul and Emily Davidson have similar reasons for choosing on-campus housing.

“I like [living in the dorms] because it’s close to everything,” Emily, a sophomore from Twin Falls, Idaho, said.“I’d rather be close to everything that is going on.”

The Rameys previously lived in a basement apartment which gave them privacy. For them, it will be hard getting used to the openness of the complex.

“Everything is facing each other, and anyone can see right in,” Tim said.

On the other hand, the closeness is something the Davidsons rely on.

“I like the dorms because it gives me a chance to meet a bunch of different people,” Emily said. “Living so close to other married people will be fun.”

The on-campus family housing units have two bedrooms and are furnished. They cost $457 per month, including utilities. Although the rent is slightly higher than other units, couples can save money.

“We are saving money even though we pay more rent,” Tim said. “All the utilities are included: cable, electricity, phone and the Internet.”

The Rameys consider the coin-operated laundry to be another asset to the complex.

“In our experience, it is the cheapest in Rexburg, almost by half,” Tim said.

For the Davidsons, the dorms are an added bonus because of the furnishings that are provided.

“We don’t have any furniture because we were married [Dec. 21],” Emily said. “Besides, we don’t want to haul anything around with us.”

There is a waiting list that couples can sign up for any dorms that become available.
