Idaho/Utah AAPT Meeting 2018

February 23-24

The thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Idaho-Utah Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) will be held on Friday, February 23, and Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University - Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho.

General Schedule

The conference will begin Friday evening with a host-yourself dinner at Pizza Pie Cafe starting at 5:00 P.M., for those who would like to attend.

Check in will open at 6:00 P.M. in the lobby of the George Romney Building on the BYU-Idaho campus, with our traditional demo show starting at 7:00 P.M. The demo show is open to the public.

Our regular meetings will commence Saturday Morning at 8:30 A.M. and will include our traditional raffle. If you have any items that you would like to donate, please bring them with you.

Registration

You do not have to be an official member of the AAPT to attend. Cost is $8 for students and $12 for everyone else. The cost includes a continental breakfast, lunch and snacks on Saturday. Register Here.

To guarantee a lunch, you must register before Wednesday, February 21.

Note: due to campus policies there are no caffeinated beverages available on campus, though you are welcome to bring them with you.

Student Poster Session

We will once again feature a Saturday morning student poster session, with prizes given out to the top 4 posters. Please encourage your students to contribute.

The prizes are:

Talks, Posters, and Demo submissions

You can submit abstracts with this form. There are four categories:

  1. Demo reserves a spot in the demo show.
  2. Talk reserves a traditional 15 min timeslot.
  3. Poster reserves a spot in the student poster session.
  4. Workshop reserves a double talk slot (30 min.) for an interactive presentation.

Over the past few years, we've had a handful of presenters bring learning activities to work through as a group. A workshop presentation is for those who have a learning activity that would be more effective to do with us rather than simply tell us, but can't condense the activity to 15 min.

Abstracts are due on February 221.

High School Teacher Collaboration Meeting

Saturday afternoon there will be a time set aside for all attending High School Teachers to meet and network with each other. It will be a chance to share your successes and concerns in your classroom, and find out how your fellow teachers handle theirs.

Ride Sharing

For those of you who would like to participate, we've created this ride share sheet. We recognize that sometimes it is hard to find transport to and from the meeting, so if you have extra room, or are looking for a ride, you can fill out a row on the sheet. Once you have found a ride, or have filled up your empty seats, please delete the row.

A few warnings: We do not endorse any of the drivers/riders who have signed up to share rides. Any arrangements you make at your own risk. Also, the sheet is available to anyone who has the link, so do not share any information that you would not want publically available.

Parking

You can park in any on campus lot after 4 P.M. on Friday and all day Saturday, or any Rexburg street marked as university "U" parking after 5:00 P.M. on Friday and all day Saturday. It should be easy to find parking on Saturday, but it may be difficult on Friday night. Here is a map of available parking.

Additional Notes

As a religious institution, we are a strictly tobacco and alcohol free campus. So, if you smoke or use other tobacco products, please be aware that you must leave our campus to do so.

1. Any students who bring a poster will be allowed to present, as long as we have space. However, if they submit their abstract after February 22, it will not be in the printed program.
