Course Description

This course covers small business accounting, using QuickBooks software. Topics include creating a chart of accounts, recording customer and vendor transactions, processing payroll, and printing reports. In addition, how to set up a new company is covered as well as advanced topics such as exporting to Excel software and using the QuickBooks audit trail. An in-depth accounting knowledge is not required but having some accounting background will help considerably.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Understand how to set up QuickBooks correctly and maintain it.
  2. Be able to use QuickBooks on a daily basis.
  3. Be able to provide useful reports with the information needed to help business owners make knowledgeable financial decisions.

Learning Model Architecture

This course is designed around the principles of the BYU-Idaho Learning Model: Prepare, Teach One Another, and Ponder/Prove. You will prepare by reading the textbook and watching QuickBooks (QBs) video tutorials. These will explain how to use the various functions in QuickBooks. Teach One Another activities are designed to provide opportunities to help each other to better grasp the logistics of QBs. These opportunities will be provided as weekly discussion board topics as well as a Final Project that you will present to the class. You should take opportunities to ponder or reflect on the things you learn each week and share your thoughts through the discussion board. You will prove your understanding and learning on assignments, quizzes, and the project.
